Today, a thought came to me that I haven’t been able to shake ever since.

We spend so much of our lives trying to figure out who we are, as if there’s one definitive version of ourselves. The real one. The authentic one. The one that, once we find it, stays the same forever. But what if that’s not true?

I’ve realised that I’m the same person with everyone, and yet, at the same time, I’m never exactly the same. There are people who make me incredibly curious, conversations that make me want to ask questions, to listen, and to explore ideas I had never considered before. There are people who bring out my softer side, making me naturally gentle and affectionate in ways I don’t even notice until I’m with them. There are others who bring out my lighter side, the part of me that laughs without overthinking. And then there are people with whom a completely different kind of intimacy emerges—more instinctive, more physical. None of these versions of me feels fake. They’re all me.

Maybe that’s what fascinates me so much about human relationships. I don’t think other people change us. I think they simply offer us a different space in which to exist. And within each of those spaces, certain parts of us naturally come alive while others quietly remain in the background.

It’s a bit like music. The notes are always the same, but change the instruments and an entirely different song begins to play. Maybe we’re like that too. We’re not just one person. We’re a collection of possibilities, and every genuine connection illuminates a different one.

I like to think that’s the real meaning of connection. Not finding someone who completes us, but meeting someone who allows us to discover a part of ourselves we didn’t even know was there.
