LIVING OR DOCUMENTING?

LIVING OR DOCUMENTING?

One of the strangest things about creating ULY KHAOS has been coming back to social media.

From 2018 until this year, I lived without them. It wasn’t a statement, a challenge or some kind of digital detox. They simply disappeared from my life, and after a while I stopped thinking about them completely. Then ULY KHAOS was born, and I suddenly found myself opening Instagram again, planning posts, recording videos and trying to build an online presence.

I expected to struggle with algorithms, trends or figuring out what works. Instead, I discovered something I never expected: I’d forgotten to document my life.

Not because I don’t know how. Quite the opposite. It just never occurs to me.

I’ll spend an afternoon working on a collage, exploring a city, taking photographs or having a conversation that stays with me for days. Then, hours later, I’ll suddenly think, “Oh… I didn’t take a single picture.” Or someone will ask me if I filmed it, and the answer is always the same. No.

Not because I chose not to. Because I genuinely forgot.

That made me realise something I hadn’t thought about before. Our brains don’t just adapt to technology. They adapt to whatever becomes normal.

If you spend years documenting everything, reaching for your phone becomes almost unconscious. If you spend years simply living the moment, that becomes your default instead.

For almost eight years, I never looked at an experience wondering whether other people would see it. I wasn’t thinking about captions, stories or reels. I was just there.

Now I’m trying to build something that, by its nature, needs to be shared. And I love that. I love the idea of creating a project that can reach people all over the world. But at the same time, I keep noticing this strange gap between my life and my phone. My instinct is still to experience first and remember later that I could have documented it.

Maybe I’ll eventually get used to it again.

Or maybe I’ll always be the person who forgets to take the photo because she’s too busy living the moment.

And honestly…

I’m not sure that’s such a bad habit to have.
